A look inside the first memorial that helped inspire the heart of A Beautiful Friend—a deeply personal celebration designed around the life, faith, passions, and memories of Kevin P. Thompson.
A Private Goodbye
We began the memorial process with an intimate butterfly release reserved for Kevin’s immediate family—his wife, children, and grandchildren. Before gathering with others to celebrate his life, this private ceremony created a quiet and meaningful space for those closest to him to simply be together.
It gave each family member the opportunity to share personal thoughts, reflect on treasured memories, express what was in their hearts, and say goodbye in their own way.
As the butterflies were released, the moment became a beautiful and peaceful beginning to honoring Kevin’s life, allowing the family time to grieve, remember, and love privately before the larger celebration began.
Welcoming Family & Friends
We created this welcoming space at the entrance to the memorial as a warm introduction to Kevin’s celebration of life, filling it with thoughtful details that reflected both his family and his faith. Photographs of Kevin with his wife and each of his children helped make the display deeply personal and gave guests a glimpse into the relationships he treasured most.
Instead of a traditional guest book, guests were invited to sign individual wooden crosses and place them into a shadowbox featuring a photograph of Kevin in the background, creating a beautiful keepsake for the family to cherish long after the memorial. We also provided memory cards where guests could share favorite stories and special moments, along with programs and Kleenex for their comfort.
Even the smallest details were chosen with Kevin in mind. His favorite Tootsie Rolls were available for guests to enjoy, alongside memorial cards and meaningful keepsakes to take home, including prayer crosses, Jesus-themed tokens, and forget-me-not seeds. Each element was intentionally selected to create more than just a welcome table—it was a personal reflection of Kevin, his generous spirit, his love for his family, and the faith that was such an important part of his life.
Celebrating What He Loved
This memorial display was thoughtfully designed to tell Kevin’s story through the things he loved most. Each detail reflected a piece of his personality, his passions, his faith, and the life he shared with those who loved him.
His love of guitar and bluegrass music was woven throughout the display, alongside personal touches representing favorites like Yahtzee, painting, “more cowbell,” and the New York Yankees. Elements honoring his years as a pastor reflected the faith and ministry that were such an important part of his life.
Warm wooden accents paid tribute to Kevin’s talent for carpentry, while photographs from throughout his life allowed family and friends to remember the many chapters that made his story uniquely his.
Together, these details created more than a memorial display—they created a personal reflection of Kevin and a celebration of a life well lived.
A Special Touch
For the banquet hall, we wanted to keep the feel warm and meaningful without overwhelming the space. This allowed simplicity to be a part of the beauty.
Simple wooden touches and softly glowing candlelight were used throughout the room to create a natural, welcoming atmosphere that complemented the overall theme.
Personalized signs honored family members who were unable to attend, making sure their presence and love were still represented on this special day.
A beautiful collection of family photographs also gave guests a place to pause, reminisce, share stories, and remember the many moments that made Kevin's life so special.
Together, these thoughtful details transformed a simple banquet hall into a space that felt personal, connected, and filled with memories.
His Life Through Music
Music was an important part of Kevin’s life, so we wanted it to be more than background—it became part of the way his story was told. A bagpiper honored Kevin’s roots and heritage, creating a powerful and meaningful moment for family and friends.
Personalized acoustic music brought another layer of warmth to the celebration, with songs chosen to reflect Kevin’s personality, faith, memories, and love of music.The familiar sounds created moments for guests to pause, reflect, and remember him in a deeply personal way.
Together, these musical touches helped create an atmosphere that felt unmistakably Kevin—meaningful, heartfelt, and filled with the sounds and traditions that were part of the life he loved.
Dressed in His Memory
As a final personal touch, we invited guests to dress in something that reflected the things Kevin loved most. From musicians and favorite bands to his faith, beloved movies, sports, and meaningful memories, each shirt and outfit became its own small tribute to the many pieces of his personality and life.
Rather than asking everyone to dress traditionally, this gave family and friends the freedom to choose something that reminded them personally of Kevin. It brought warmth and individuality to the gathering while creating conversations, shared memories, and even a few smiles as guests recognized the meaning behind one another’s choices.
It was a simple but heartfelt way to celebrate Kevin as he truly was and to surround the day with the people, passions, humor, faith, and memories that made his life uniquely his.
A Life Remembered in Motion
Photos capture a moment, but a memorial video allows a story to unfold. This tribute was created to bring together meaningful photographs, memories, music, and moments from Kevin’s life—creating something his family could watch, share, and treasure long after the celebration ended.
